Fishiki Fly Fishing
United States
Приєднався 8 сер 2017
Follow along with me off the beaten path as I fly fish many different kinds of water and terrain in the Rocky Mountains. I enjoy every kind of fly fishing technique from tenkara fishing to fly fishing from a pontoon boat. As long as there is trout in the water, I'll be found trying to outsmart these fish! Living in Utah gives me great access to everything Utah has to offer and a short trip away from many iconic fly fishing waters in surrounding states.
Fly Fishing - Late Fall Trout Camp
After a long year of drought here in the West, a rainy fall finally put some water in the creeks and lakes. After being MIA for most of the year due to the drought and time constraints, I was finally able to catch a break with some buddies of mine to head to the lake and get into a bunch of tiger trout. It's been a while since I've uploaded, but I'm happy to say that I've made some camera upgrades this past year and look forward to getting new content up more often. Look out for my more traditional vlog videos as well as some shorter videos like this one. Thanks, for taking a look into my world!

Creek Fly Fishing In A Blizzard For Rainbow Trout

Fly fishing a small creek in a blizzard for rainbow trout. I decided to go throw small crystal buggers in the snow with my 3WT Redington Butterstick. I had been flinging a white crystal bugger for about 15 minutes and BAM, fish on. check out the full video to se...

Tenkara and Fly Fishing for Brook Trout in Utah. The day started out cold and snowy but the brook trout were willing to take flies. Like your style, I'm from Mt, and always have my waders on.
What net is that? Love that its foldable
Great video Mike id love to get out with you on the tenkara rod. Thanks again.
I like the net idea but, leather pouch? Constantly dipping the net in water, water spray from walking (or falling). Seems it would last too long. The net does seem solid though. Great for short walks and impromptu fishing when you happen upon a creek.
What's the name of your landing net? And where to buy it?
great👍
Great video
Drop the Back ground Music ! Need Voice intro !, real need to work on information about were your fishing !!
I love me a Handy Pack Net. I got one a while back, it's a really neat thing to have.
Ag Ag
Looking forward to mine I have the tinyten2 but still to big for the creeks I want to fish.
I enjoy the Dragontail Mizuchi a lot and the Hellbender for bigger fish.
Amazing video, great footage
FUN FUN FUN!!!!! THANK YOU!!!!
What rod are uou useing
This rod is best for bow and arrow casting in very tight places. Otherwise, not an ideal casting rod. The 8' tiny tenkara is much, much better.
nothing make sense in this video... fishing downstream, with the sun on your back... That stream maybe completely virgin.
I guess you're in the states. How are the regulations on fishing in creeks and streams in USA? Do you need a license or permit to do it? I'm on my way creating my own UL tenkara kit so bring with me when I backpack and this was inspiring.
I know I'm late, but you have to have a state license. So when you travel to a state you can buy a license for a few days to fish. As for keeping the fish, you can keep them unless it's marked otherwise.
Nice day, great water and good fishing, tight lines, thumbs up and greetings from New Zealand, Tony.
Thanks, for checking out my video and dropping a comment! As your season is ending ours is just beginning, so look out for some new videos dropping soon! Cheers!
@@FishikiFlyFishing Enjoy your season, there are lots of water in New Zealand that are open all year round and we fish every weekend different waters in different places, tight lines,, Tony.
Clyde is one of my favorites! What length rod? I'm looking for a Tenkara rod to keep handy when I'm hiking and don't have time to pull out the fly rod.
I was using a 12’ rod with a about 15’ of combined line and leader. Many of the lakes in that area have trout right in shore and I always had plenty of reach. I definitely recommend having a tenkara rod on those backpacking trips, saves you on a little bit of space and hassle. Cheers!
@@FishikiFlyFishing Thanks, I was thinking 12-13'. I'm going to hike the Highline this summer and figured a Tenkara rod would be perfect as I'm passing all the small creeks and lakes.
My attraction for fishing these little streams is growing, awesome video thanks for your time..
Yeah, it’s a totally different game. The way these fish survive in these little creeks always blows me away. It’s always fun to see all of the different places you can find fish hiding. Thanks, for watching! Cheers!
Hi Mike, I'm really glad I did. Loved the video and just bought the 301G with ghost netting of your link. Love the minimalist approach. Love to hear more about your gear suggestions. What about the glasses!
These glasses are nothing too special, I always go pretty cheap on glasses because I tend to beat them up pretty easily. These are polarized attcl glasses from amazon. In all honesty, I usually buy these from the amazon warehouse page and usually score a pair or two for $10 a piece. The polarization on these are actually really awesome, and I’m usually the first one to spot fish when I’m out with friends on a river. As far as other gear, maybe I’ll do a video going through some of it. Keep an eye out for a video sometime in the near future. Cheers!
Where do you buy or how do you make your short Tenkara line? The smallest I have been able to find so far is 8ft.
I buy a 20 ft pvc line from dragontail and cut it to the length that I want. Here’s a link to the line I use. DRAGONtail Light PVC Floating Tenkara Line 20ft (Cut Down to Length Wanted) www.amazon.com/dp/B098TZMP2L/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_i_F68GQSZWPFDD8SW00BT1
Poor fish handling
You seem like a fun person! Thanks, for watching!
What is the weight limit for these types of rods in relation to the size limit of the fish being caught. Thanks
Not sure on the limit, but I probably wouldn’t try to catch anything over 12” with this. This is definitely a rod for really small brooks and streams.
Looks like a great net--just ordered one! Keep up the great job on your videos.
Awesome! You won’t regret it. I’m such a huge fan of these handy pak nets. Thanks, for watching! Cheers!
I'm new at all of this and am starting to like the glass rods for some things. I just got a Moonshine 3 WT that will be fun to catch the small ones on.
Nice! I purchased a 10ft 5WT moonshine rod last year. I’ve used it for fishing Stillwater mostly, but they make a great rod! I’m still a sucker for the butterstick but I’m hoping to get my hands on a blue halo glass rod here soon. Thanks, for watching!
Looks like you guys had a great time! Beautiful spot and beautiful fish!
Thanks! This was a great spot where I had never been before. I will definitely be taking a trip back here sometime this summer. Thanks, for watching!
Well done as always. I do need some more content though my dude.
Thanks!!
Thank you for watching!
Do you use furled line for dry files?
I’ve tried furled lines on my tenkara rod a few times but I prefer to use pvc line. After a bit of time in the water, I always ended up having to use dry fly ointment and different floatants to keep the furled line on top of the water and it was a bit of a hassle. I especially had problems keeping the line floating in creeks and rivers with swifter currents. Thanks, for watching!
Great vid and rod
Thank you for watching!
Do you use a floating line or level line when dry fly fishing tenkara? I just ordered my first tenkara rod and plan on doing alot of dry fly fishing with it. Those were some fat west slope for that tiny creek! I've caught 4 species of cutthroat here in Wyoming, but not the west slope which is only available in very limited numbers in Yellowstone.
Hey! I personally like to fish with pvc floating line. I have done that a few different ways in the past. I've ordered 2wt pvc fly line and just cut what I've needed for each tenkara rod, and I've also ordered dragontail pvc floating line which is what I prefer. Everyone has their own preferences, so I'd try out a few different types of line. I'm in no way a tankara purist so I'm not sure that I really fish it traditionally. I just do what I can to catch trout. Cheers!
@@FishikiFlyFishing Sweet! Ive got one of those dragontail float lines, as well as a few different level lines. With the huge snow storm we got last week, I haven't had the chance to take my new tenkara rod out. I'm an absolute newbie to tenkara but have fly fished my whole life. I think it's going to be a fun, minimalist method and I think it's going to be super effective on small water with finicky fish. Looking forward to getting out there. Thanks for taking the time to message me back!
Interesting video, we are friends.
Hello friend!
Cotten kills lol
Those were such beautiful places you fished, and beautiful fish too. Great photography. Cheers!
Thank you! I feel very fortunate to live where I do. I’m only minutes away from many mountain streams with strong populations of trout. Thanks, for watching!
god
Beautiful country. I know you said you were after Brookies but if you ever go back you need to hit East Red Castle Lake. Loaded with 14-16 in Tigers.
Absolutely. I never try to get to everything I want to do on one trip, that way I always have a reason to go back! I’ll make sure to hit that lake next time I’m up there, thanks for the recommendation!
great show
Thank you, I appreciate you taking the time to watch it!
Buyer beware. First trip out, the ferrule separated from the rod tip. I was pulling in a 4-6 inch whitefish. The ferrule, lillian, leader, tippet, snap, fly, and (likely dead) fish are now one big rat's nest in the river. Before you go out, give your rod a pull test and make sure your tippet breaks before the shitty glue on the ferrule gives up.
Yeah, always a good idea to check the ferrule before you go out on any tenkara rod. Give it a few tugs and make sure it's in there nice and tight. I've had this happen on a few different brands. I know that sometimes the epoxy used for bonding can be heat sensitive. Whether the bond comes loose from poor production, or from shipping in a hot box, I don't know. I know from experience that leaving any fly rods in a hot car can cause problems. If you catch it before you go out, grab some epoxy and let it sit overnight and you'll be set.
Check out TenkaraBum. He's like the Original Gangster American Tenkara angler. All if not most of the rods he sells are made in Japan. And his website is a treasure trove of Tenkara knowledge. He's a legend lol. Nice guy to talk to also.
Oh yeah, tenkarabum definitely knows what he’s doing. I’d definitely steer anyone in his direction for technical questions and recommendations. Thanks, for recommending him to me and everyone else going through these comments!
Great video man
Thank you!
Sweet video. Perfect stream for that rod.
Thank you! Yeah, I’ve fished many little creeks like this with that rod. Unfortunately I haven’t found an easy way to film these solo trips on those tight little creeks. I’m going to try to experiment this year, and hopefully put out more content with the tiny ten and tiny ten 2. Thanks, for watching!
Where are you fishing in Utah? I just moved to Orem. I’m new to fly fishing, it seems to be a pricy sport. Tenkara seems a lot cheeper to get into. How much is that rod? For such a small pole what length line and tip-it do you put on it?
Hey there! Sorry I’m just getting around to your question. I fish anywhere from Nephi up to Logan. This little rod here is on the more affordable side but can be a bit more difficult to catch fish if your new to the sport. I’d recommend starting with a tenkara rod in the 10-12’ range on bigger water. I generally keep my line length the same length of the rod or shorter. Honestly, just get a cheap tenkara rod on Amazon, see if you like it and then splurge on something a bit more expensive if it’s something you enjoy. Just like anything else, tenkara and fly fishing can be as affordable or expensive as you make it. You can get by with minimal gear and entry level gear or get all the bells and whistles. Cheers!
Great video can I ask what one of these rods cost I would love to get into Tenkara Fly fishing
$60 for this model

I'm new to fly fishing and float tubing. About how far do you cast the fly out?
It really depends on the type of lake that I’m fishing and what kind of fly fishing I’m doing. If I’m using sinking line and dragging nymphs and streamers in a lake >25 feet I will use a sinking line that is rated at around 6 IPS. Sometimes I’ll run out as much as 50 feet of line. On shallow lakes <25 feet I will use an intermediate sinking line or even just a floating line. It really depends on where the fish are. If the fish are in the top 10-15 feet of the surface I will nymph under an indicator with floating line. I will usually get within 20-30 feet of where I want my flies when I’m fishing with an indicator. I try to always use at least a 9’ rod so I can cast a bit further. Sitting low in the water is one of the major limiting factors to a long cast when throwing flies. I hope that helps.
😲 beautiful video!
Thank you for watching! I’m glad you enjoyed it!
What is the weight of this net? Is it their smallest model?
Lightest one I see on their website is their plastic model with nylon net and vinyl pouch. It comes in at 8.4 oz. The plastic version with the leather pouch comes in at 9.2 oz, and the plastic version with the leather pouch and ghost net (rubber) comes in at 14oz. So going by these weights from their website there 0.8oz difference between the vinyl pouch and leather pouch, and a 4.8oz penalty for going for the rubber net vs their nylon net. But you can buy nearly everything except for the metal band separately.
Thomas has some great information for you, I hope that answered your question. My two cents would be that unless you are super ultralight I would go with the rubber net and teak wood. The quality is fantastic and the few extra ounces are worth it for the durability and quality. I don’t have the plastic version but I tend to be someone that beats up my gear pretty good and the teak wood has really held up nice. It looks as good as new and I’ve used it weekly since I put out this video. Cheers!
@@FishikiFlyFishing thanks to both of you guys!
